The amount of salmon farmed across the US and Canada has led to many different
involved companies and strategies either governmental or commercially owned. In the
Yukon River, there are both forms of harvesting the fish. The local residence or the Yukon
have been traditionally catching the fish for centuries. Declining populations have
instigated scientific research into the causes and possible preventions for future
conservation (purpose and reasons).
Through large scale salmon trap and check with the help of comparing numbers to
previous years, data sets accurate results can be achieved (the problem). The main
findings are that the young juvenile salmon are being overfished commercially in the
Bering Sea which then affects the population in the Yukon River. (facts)
Furthermore, attempts to widen the Yukon River where it meets the Bering Sea have
only harmed populations. Future management of the Yukon river needs to established by
governmental organizations and local tribes to ensure people remain abundant. A
continuation strategy needs to be also developed with the Bering sea fisheries to provide a
fair amount of fishing and population replenishment. Locals and commercial fisheries
need to come to an arrangement of ownership and care for the river and its populations of
salmon (concluding statement).
